Again, you may want to put these FAQs in a brochure or something so that non-internet users (and/or non-blog readers) can have their questions answered. These brochures could be available at all Q Card vendors and locations with bus schedule racks (like libraries).

I figure I might as well put my money where my mouth is and help test this thing. Plus, it's blogfodder, right. ;)

I've been keeping a lot of every transaction and transfer... most works, but had a bit of a scare when I added $50 to it and it didn't show that.

I did not get a reply from the QCard email address though. They checking it?

Went into DTC Glass Palace. RideStore sent me up the escalator. After a brief scrum and huddle, I was told by Treasury that funds are added in the form of Contracts. When one contract ends, the next in the stack appears. Not quite as simple as "It stores the value on the card" and might give people a scare.

Readers only show top contract on the stack. So it has 57 bucks on there, but BEEP only shows 7. Wrote that to the qcard email address... they're going to get a lot of spooked riders.

Also, no Espanol on the back of the card. Every other pass by METRO has had at least an "Informacion" on there. If you're going to have the robotvoices go biligual, might as well have the Q card do it, too.

We'll see what happens when the current freebie contract runs out next week and my fifty bucks are at the plate. Does it slam like Berkman or whiff like Ensberg?

When I boarded one bus with my QCard, the driver was chatting with the patron who boarded just before me. I tried to wait until the driver was looking at me and the QCard reader, but had to go ahead and tap the card to the reader without being sure that the driver saw me. The driver looked a little puzzled, but I held up my card for him to see and he seemed to be OK with that.
Will there be an audible confirmation of payment via QCard for the driver similar to that of the current fare boxes? This might save problems similar to those encountered by Mark and by me.
Also, when I boarded one bus early one morning (near the origination point of the route) the QCard reader displayed "Shift Closed". I tried the QCard, but no green light. I asked the driver if the reader was working and he seemed a little surprised or confused, then said that he needed to "restart" the machine. As I began to reach for my wallet to pay via cash, he waived me on, giving me a "pass".
Might need to make sure that all of the drivers are expecting the QCards to be used.
Otherwise, I'm impressed with the system thus far. Seems to handle transfers (from bus to light rail) correctly. I think that the system will be much easier to use than the current cash fares and transfer cards.

I think it has something to do with whether the driver has 'logged in' to the system correctly. I say this because this morning I was on the 53 route where the drivers' seat on the bus was leaking air and the driver could not stand the noise. The bus was swapped for another and we all boarded that bus. She appearently didn't log off from the previous bus because it wouldn't let her log-on on the second bus and along with that the Qbox read "Shift Closed".

I can guess what this means, but, can you confirm, Ms. Sit, what to do when this happens (other than pay cash!)?

Also, is there an up-to-date list of vendors who are set up now to "recharge" the value on my QCard? There is a QCard machine on the Ensemble/HCC rail platform, but it is not operational. Also, I went to one of the Kroger's stores listed as a QCard vendor on the materials I received with the QCard, but the clerk at the store said that they were not yet set up to handle QCards.

I'm looking for a vendor to recharge the card who is near the Medical Center and is open after 6:00 p.m. Alternatively, point me to an up-to-date list and I'll find one open after 6:00 p.m. Thanks...David

As you know, you are testing METRO’s Q Card system and several things are happening.

1)Bus operators are experiencing first-hand what happens when riders use the Q Box. They have been trained, and now Q Boosters are activating the process and in essence, giving our operators first -hand experience. If for some reason your card doesn't work, the bus operator has been insturcted to let you on at no charge. This policy is only valid for the testing phase. Once we go live, riders will have to pay cash or get their cards reloaded.

2) Every time you use your card, the back end of the system (meaning the central brain of the system) is also being activated. We can track trips in order to reward Q Boosters five free trips for every 15 paid trips. As a Q Booster, you get this special offer. When the system goes live, it will be programmed for five free trips per every 50 paid trips.

3) When you add value to your card at one of the retailers, you are activating the retailers' process. They will get to experience their training first-hand as well.

We are asking Q Boosters to refer to the list of retailers on our Web site. The list that was in your Q Booster packet will be valid by the middle of next week. Again, Kroger had a delay in its validation process which was unforseen, but will be ready for Q Boosters to visit next week.

There was a question concerning registering your Q Card. As a Q Booster, your card was registered before it was sent out. The brochure you received encourages all riders to register by filling out the form in the brochure.

We will be answering your questions as they come.

Thanks,

Your Q Card Team Member

RE: Free transfers and traveling in the same direction:

Free transfers are allowed within two hours to any bus or train needed to complete the trip. The system will allow transfers to any bus other than buses on the same route in the reverse direction (no round tripping).

RE: Where to get a Q Card reloaded at the Medical Center.

Probably the easiest way to recharge the card in the Med Center after 6:00 pm is at the TMC transit center. The retail booth is the transit center is open until 7:00 pm.

RE: Where to find updated list of vendors to recharge the card.

Check our Web site at www.ridemetro.org. Kroger should be ready by next week.

RE: When "Shift closed" flashes on the card reader.

Would you mind e-mailing that information to us? (Go to "Contact Us" on the blog.) We would really like to know any info on bus route, bus number, time of day, direction, or anything to help us identify it. Thanks!

The person said the machine was down. We researched that, and the machine was down for a number of hours because the storm knocked the phone line out (and the RPOS works over a phone line). The phone line was repaired the same day and we are back on.

Also, you mentioned that you had a problem trying to load your card with a retailer in the 7000 block of Fannin. We have notified the subcontractor who is responsible for the retailers, and the company is sending a trainer back out. This is a good example of where we would like to hear back from our Q Boosters. If we know there is a problem with a retailer, we will send someone out to fix it.

Thanks for reporting the problems!

If you do not already hold a senior pass (and had that pass before Oct 2, 2006), you will not be eligible for a senior fare until you are 65. If you already had the senior pass before Oct 2 (so you turned 62 before Oct 2 and had already gotten a senior pass), then you will grandfathered in.

I tried to use it on the 246 on Monday and it did not work. The driver told me that the system was not up and he did not know why Metro was telling folks it was working. I later found out that my card simply wasn't loaded with the test amount when it was sent. I was able to go to the RideStore at the Downtown TC today and had the test amount loaded on it. Everyone I spoke with at Metro, from the lady at the Q helpline to the lady at the RideStore was pleasant and helpful in trying to resolve my problem. I'm going to try it tonight and see how it works.

I have found metro personnel to be very friendly also. But too many times you ask a bus driver question and they are clueless. I don't know if it is their fault or if like a lot of other business information has a hard time making it to the lower rank and file.
