Most Riders Satisfied with TMC Swiftline
Friday, October 09, 2009 3:36 PM

SwiftLine busMost riders of the 426 TMC SwiftLine say they are very satisfied with the new route we introduced in August.

The TMC SwiftLine is an express service with five stops between the Texas Medical Center and the Southeast Transit Center.

On Sept. 23, 61 surveys were distributed and 56 were returned.

Here are some of the results:

  • About 70 percent of the respondents were using the TMC SwiftLine to travel from home to work.
  • 77 percent transferred from one bus to the SwiftLine and half transferred from SwiftLine to another bus.
  • 96 percent of riders were satisfied; 76 percent were very satisfied.
  • Most learned about SwiftLine by seeing the bus, hearing about it from family or friends, or from METRO bus drivers.
  • Six percent of the respondents were new riders to METRO.
  • About half of the respondents work at the TMC.

The SwiftLine buses are our new hybrid-electric Orion buses that are equipped with security cameras.

If you've ridden the SwiftLine, tell us what you think about it.

OK, it is not long enough.  We need the old TCF!

It's great. We need more. Three to four minutes could be dropped from the schedule so that drivers don't have to waste time en route, but that's a minor detail.

All major trunk routes should have rush hour limited stop service. Start with the Westheimer routes, then maybe 4, 65...plenty of routes are good candidates.

Finally, is there any reason all new buses can't have the improved seats?

They did split the 163 from the 2, but the 2 needs to be split again at Sharpstown.  Like what METRO did 20 years ago with the 56 and now the 24.

That 2 - Bellaire - Fondren SW branch was brutal I bet.  I'm sure it took well over 90 minutes.

And explain the split of the 56 and 24.  Used to be alot of super routes in Houston in the 70s and 80s like 10 - Jensen, 10 - S. Main, 44 - Studewood, 48 - Washington, and the 80 - Dowling. Those super routes birthed at least two or three routes each after the branch splits.  I wonder if anyone of the new blood at Metro even knows of these old routes.

I've only been here 5 years, so I missed out on all of this. But even the 8-Main circa 2004 was insane because you're going from West Rd. all the way down to W. Bellfort.

I think the issue at hand isn't the long route itself, it's the need for true limited service. The Quick/SwiftLine model is what actual Limited service should look like. Express service should basically be QL/SL that gets on the freeway at some point.

Here's an example:

Local-- 82-West Oaks

The 82 would run as it does now, hitting every stop on Westheimer.

Limited-- 482-West Oaks

The 482 would only stop where transfers can be made, once it enters Midtown. The first stop would be to transfer to the 35-Fairview, and it wouldn't stop again until Elgin, Montrose, Shepherd, Kirby, etc.

Express-- 182 West Oaks

The 182 would take the freeway to the Galleria after stopping at Elgin. Then it would stop at Post Oak, Sage, Fountainview, and so on.

as an operator...yes those "super routes " were brutal but i believe in some ways were "better"  yes they went from end to end but the ontime performance was better.

i do believe though the modification was for the good....but needed more input from general public and operations.  swiftline should have been brought back as tcf.  there need to be something better for the 2...82...look at the 52 scott...3 1/2 hrs round trip trains and everything in between but it works!!  enough buses!!

Sometime next week, I'll ride this bus and see for myself now it is.  Hopefully, it'll be a nice ride.  I've already had a nice ride on the Quickline bus---twice.

Rode the Swiftline bus yesterday and it was a nice ride.  Minus any traffic issues that the bus may be stuck in, I think it's a quick way to and from the TMC and SE Transit Centers.

METRO needs to create more routes like this and the Quickline service, IMHO.

Could the #40 be considered a "super route" since it goes literally from Acres Homes/Northwest TC to Telephone rd. and Richy/Howard st. cause it seems like the 40 is never on time or the wrong bus comes at the wront time

How about running The Blue Lagoon Circulator? It runs from Bad Metro Decision to Worse Metro Decision to, Finally, What the Hell Transfer Center....

And it's always on time....

Hey, Instead of CP time we need to create HM time.... At least partakers in CP actually work....

I normally take the 26/27 to and from work, so I didn't think that it would necessarily save me any time to use one of those buses in combination with Swiftline. However, I used Swiftline for the first time yesterday and found that it shaved 5-10 minutes off my trip (ie, I took the 426 to the Southeast TC and then took the 26 home).
