Joining the Mayor on Bike-to-Work Day
Friday, May 15, 2009 4:38 PM

Bikers riding in group from Memorial park to downtownOn National Bike Day, 10 members of Team METRO, along with other Houstonians, joined Mayor Bill White, biking from Memorial park to city hall downtown.

About 300 cyclists pedaled the 15-mile route, making it a leisurely and conversational event. The ride began at 7:30 a.m. when the day was still refreshingly cool.

"It was fun. The weather was great," said Nicole Adler, a METRO bike team member. "This was an opportunity to see how easy it is to bike to work. It encourages you to do it."

Tom Pham, a ride leader of Team METRO, said this annual event helped trigger the creation of METRO's bike team.

"We're supporting the mayor's efforts to extend bike trails all over the city, and we're also promoting our bikes-on-bus program. It's a fun thing to do - it's a national event. It's awesome. I wish more employees would attend," said Pham. Team METRO with Mayor White

Hao Le, Team METRO's vice president, said he hopes today's event will convince people that traveling to work is feasible.

"I think one event over a period of time will spread the message and convince people," said Le, who bikes to work four out of five days.

For one day at least, the bikers who joined the mayor chose a healthy, environmentally-friendly way to get to work. Bike advocates are hoping this will become a habit for workers, who will trade four wheels for two on a more regular basis.

I can just imagine the odor surrounding these METREAUX "greenies" as they stow their CHICOM-built bicycles and return to work.

One wonders how many riders shoved the bums out of the first floor rest room to take a sponge bath?

Royko is funny, but you know METRO's hierarchy never passes through those glass doors where the common man congregates. They wouldn't dare wait in line to use the restroom because there's only ONE toilet. And I'm sure somewhere beyond the card access elevators there are LARGE restrooms that don't have a 5-minute time restriction pasted on the door.

So did the people who participated in this use their vacation time? I hope they weren't paid to attend this.

We bicyclists are fortunate to have Mayor White encouraging bicycle riding in our city as a commute option. Since the first Arab oil embargo in 1973, I have been commuting to work mostly by bicycle and/or public transit, and I love it.

It always amazes me how people know when to come to this blog when there is a topic specifically about something concerning them.

I ask an entire bus load (MCI 204-NB)of passengers if they knew about METROs blog, only one person said something and she peeked at it a year or so ago.

The large, clean restrooms on the 2nd floor used to be public as you had to pass them to go to the Treasury office, but the last time I went they blocked it off.

...and WHY would want to bother a busload of folks just to ask them if they know about METRO's blog?

That's because we as a society are only interested in things that affect us directly. It's a phenomenon known as Somebody Else's Problem.

Wonder if the Mayor is going to find somebody who is dumping litter on his ride, and give them a ticket like the time he rode through Independence Heights.

I notice that there are "service adjustments" coming up. I wonder if this is "newspeak" for less service.

wi11ie,

Hard to say.  She was a little ahead of her typical level of posts, and may just be riding-the-clock, as so many bureaucrats learn to do, to keep us from expecting an extreme output of say, daily informative posts.

She could be busy writing a post "spinning" the FTA Title VI Civil Rights draft "Findings" from April 27, 2009.

The TXOAG issued OR2009-06958 on Thursday, instructing METRO to release the FTA Civil Rights draft report on the Title VI Compliance Audit performed in February.  No response yet from the Legal dept.

shoes,

What in God's name are you talking about and what does that have to do with transit (not just METRO) in general?

wi11ie,

I 3rd the motion as to knowing by now that Mary must of been on vacation since there's no new blog topics on here after this one.

Royko,

How do you know what Mary may be doing on her vacation?  Is there something we all need to know here that you're not telling us?  I'm not going to go further than that, BTW.

On the flip side, she could have at least told us that she was going on vacation and to not expect any new blog topics until she comes back.  Just a thought.

A call has been placed to see about her welfare.

Hoping for the best. Unless she is involved with another of those "Mr. Solomon" projects....

Good looking out, wi11ie.  I wish I can do that but I'll just stick with the e-mail.  Hopefully, she's NOT involved with another of those "Mr. Solomon" projects.

Cedric, you do know that "shoes" is a spambot, right?

Cedric Collins said:

Well---"shoes" can force Mary to put this blog on moderation and that wouldn't be right.

Hopefully, we won't see anymore spambots on here.
