METRO's Position on Swine Flu
Friday, May 01, 2009 4:50 PM

Medical researchers in Shanghai research swine fluThe World Health Organization said today that the number of confirmed cases of swine flu worldwide is 331. The total here in the United States is 141, including 28 cases in Texas.

As you're riding the rail and buses, confined in close spaces, you may be wondering what METRO's response is to this outbreak.

Rest assured we are monitoring the situation constantly. We have had meetings to discuss a possible swine flu outbreak, and we are in touch with state and public health officials. We will take the necessary steps to protect our riders.

While our daily headlines news tells of more local school closings and cases here in the Houston area, please bear in mind that most of the cases have been mild and most people recover without treatment.

Protecting your health while on METRO buses or trains is the same as when you are in any public space. How many times do you hang on to a pole or brush up against a seat? Practice good hygiene.

Here are some steps you can follow, recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand cleaner when hand washing is impractical.
  • Cover your mouth/nose when you cough or sneeze with tissue or your sleeve. Discard the tissue, then wash your hands.
  • If you are having flu symptoms, avoid contact with others as much as possible. Don't go to work or school.
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or become severe.

For more information, check out the Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services or the City of Houston's Health and Human Services Department.

You can also call a free hotline, 24/7, staffed by Harris County nurses. 713/633.2255.

In the photo above, Shanghai doctors who have experience with SARS study a case of possible swine flu.

Well I see some VERY unsanitary people on the rail and bus. I try my best not to touch the metal bars.

I'm  sure that since Metro is "monitoring" the situation there should be no problem.

I noticed that no one from Metro hinted at or discussed the FACT that coming in contact with a large group or strangers in a confined space is one of the quickest wasys to spread and contact infectious diseases.

Biden hit it right on the head with his comment but was rebuked because people didn't want to cause financial distress to airline and transit companies.

The masks hardly work at all at deterring infections unless you but the medical versions and install them correctly but even still, one would be wise to avoid large crowds (in CONFINED locations.

Here is a quote from Dr. Mark Dworkin, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health online;

"A mask is a barrier that can protect your nose and mouth from droplets that fly in the air when someone coughs. But it will not protect the conjunctiva of your eyes, which is another entry point. A mask doesn't protect your hands from picking up the virus in the environment. The bottom line with masks is that they're reassuring to those who wear them but they evoke fear in those who see them. They are not foolproof for blocking transmission of the flu."

I saw a yellow paper barely hanging on the Qcard machine at the Downtown rail station with a strip of scotch tape. I didn't have time to read it but it was about the flu and METRO.

HA!

But I noticed the buses have been quite clean within the past few days. Keep it up METRO!!!

Route 1 may be safer then some others since those people visit the hospital regularly.

I would be more concerned about some other routes. I think saying anything would be borderline racist, so I wont comment.

Didn't ride Friday. Thought I was overreacting, so I rode today. Metro had a nice yellow warning paper on every seat of the bus about Swine Flu, so now I'm rethinking my rethinking.

when i got on the bus this morning there were yellow papers thrown all across the floor and if you wanted to read one you had to pick it up off the dirty where the flu could of been living, why not tape the notices to the windows of the bus or something instead of letting them be thrown all over the floor.

gotta love public transit

Did METRO tells the drivers to keep it cold on the buses?

Every bus I got on today was freezing, even the woman that keeps it hot had the a/c on.

The swine flu should be just another vexing diseases those herded by METREAUX like "sheeple" onto the Lee. P. Brown legacy boondoggle tram.

There is drug resistant TB, a couple of types of meningitis, and who knows what else in our beloved "Sanctuary City."

Clean Metro buses? I see alot riding metro 7 days a week -eating, drinking, spitting on the floor, people blowing their noses on the floor, sticky floors, sticky seats, dirty diapers, roaches, that pink and black slime mold that grows on the overhead hand rails (seriously, look closely...), but clean buses?

Well you know, the P&R buses... lol

And lets applaud METRO PD... Today they took out one less menace.

I'm not going to even try to make sense of what ROKEAUX said above, but you should have seen the rubber-tired mobility in the Med Center when they closed Main St today. I wish I could have watched the jam for longer, but the train whisked me right through...

C, Metro Police narrowly missed killing an innocent person according to news that I read. The officer who did it needs some disciplinary action and some retraining.

Does anybody know that this so-called "Swine Flu" is like any other flu and if not treated properly, your life may be at risk?  Too many people around here are just taking this way out of proportion.  If anybody here have heard of what Ron Paul said on one local newscast (I did---Fox 26), I would have to agree with him 100%.

"   * Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand cleaner when hand washing is impractical.

   * Cover your mouth/nose when you cough or sneeze with tissue or your sleeve. Discard the tissue, then wash your hands.

   * If you are having flu symptoms, avoid contact with others as much as possible. Don't go to work or school.

   * Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or become severe."

Common sense advice, if you ask me.

Yeah retraining on how to keep slugs from going thru someone and busting a looky-loo?

Nah, training to get rid of those speed shooters(9s and 40s)and punch out that dirtbags existence with a 45 auto.

Shoot'em in the arm,leg or the butt and they still bleed out the same.

End result?

Goodness prevails.
