Katy Tollway Opens, Helps Ease Congestion
Monday, April 20, 2009 5:37 PM

Katy Freeway manaegd lanes at nightMonday morning rush-hour traffic just got a whole lot easier for west Houston residents who take the Katy Freeway.

For those with EZ tags on their windows, you were able to slip into one of the  Katy Freeway Managed Lanes today - and speed by the clogged traffic for a price.

The managed lanes are two lanes in each direction between Texas 6 and Loop 610. The 12 miles of roadway were opened on Saturday by The Harris County Toll Road Authority.

These lanes replace the single, reversible high-occupancy vehicle lane.

The Katy Tollway is free for carpoolers and vanpoolers who use the lanes during peak times. Single-occupancy drivers can use the lanes if they have an EZ Tag or TxTag and will be charged electronically.

Pricing will vary, depending on traffic conditions and time of day. This dynamic pricing is based on supply and demand. Toll fees are adjusted to keep traffic flowing optimally at all times.

I came through early PM today.  4 ML were heavily used.  Nobody in the HOT.  Yet.

Mary,

You forgot THREE important things:

1.  Between 5 and 11 AM, and 2 to 8 PM, 2+ cars can use the HOT for FREE!  No EZ tags needed.  Just stay in Left Lane at the 3 Tolling Plazas.  Note:  These times are BIDIRECTIONAL!

2.  METRO can run 60 buses an hour in the HOT!  Boy, you can runa lot of fares in those lanes with Artics and /or DD's!

3.  SOV's need either EZ Tag, TexTAG or the T-Ball tag of the North Texas Turnpike Authority.  The NTTA is the "HCTRA" of the DFW area.

BTW, This is a question fot the HCTRA, but I have noticed something.  There is signage for the EZ Tag, and TXTag, but none for the NTTA T-Ball logo?  OK, the thing is likely copyrighted, but the things can work here.  You would think the HCTRA would try to "advertise" to possible users.  Dallas is up IH-45, not next to Deep Space Nine!

The new fast toll lanes have added THIRTY minutes to my trip so far this week in the morning. I leave the Kingsland park and ride at 7:30 am on the 221 and we have literally been backed up before Hwy 6 for 20-30 minutes inbound. I hope this is just the first week shakedown as EZ Tag riders get used to the system. If not I will have to leave a half hour earlier I guess in order to make up for the time I am SUPPOSED to be saving with the new freeway...Then if all goes to Murphy's Law Metro will raise the park and ride rate another dollar.
