METRO Matters Explains Ins & Outs of Routes
Wednesday, April 08, 2009 5:06 PM

Ever wonder why METRO designs certain routes that end 10 blocks from your favorite store?

METRO carries some 108 million riders every year. Our 1,200 buses drive in an area of about 1,285 square miles.

So what goes into planning our routes? And do your suggestions come into play?

Our guest on this edition of METRO Matters is an expert on transportation planning. Kim Slaughter, associate vice president for planning, has more than 20 years in transportation planning in both the public and private sectors.

Click here to watch the show.

You can also view METRO Matters on Comcast's Channel 19,HCCTV, Houston Community College's channel. It airs every week on the following days:

 Sunday  11 a,m.,

Tuesday 6:30 p.m.

Thursday 2 p.m.

108 million divided by 52 week averages out to about umm 2.07 million riders per week...

76 of those 2.07 million are projected to make use of MAD each week...

Mary:

I asked the following a few posts ago, but never heard back from you:

"Wikipedia page on Quickline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quickline) indicates that 402 will start service June 1, 2009. This update was entered anonymously by someone at a Texas Medical Center computer on April 2 -- last Thursday.

It's not clear whether this guy is in a position to know, as it doesn't indicate where this information came from.

Mary -- can you confirm that June 1 is the plan for the 402?

Everyone else -- will the construction that some suggested was delaying Metro from kicking-off service still be going on in June?"

What is the story on this? Will the 402 start service June 1 or not?

Robert

Robert......you probably won't hear back and if you do more LIES!!  ask where are the buses that were purchased for QL service?

mizz_porkie,

The buses are (I personally think they better not be) collecting dust at West.

Robert,

I don't believe the June 1st launch myself---although I may also want to blame construction for all these delays.

OK, where ARE those missing silver buses?

They either:

1.  Went to OZ via a thurnderstorm.

2.  Enetered a wormwole.

3.  Are at Area 51.

4.  Grew up, and turned into artics (Yeh!)

5.  Became avian, and are greeting people at Wheeler Sta.

6.  Got taken by pirates off the Horn of Africa.

7.  Turned while at a painting station at K BOF.

There are a bunch of 3600's in that lot at K BOF.  No more silver buses.  All white.  K does have a painting booth:  I have seen it.  Unless some students from Hogwarts used a spell to change the color.

Maybe it wouldn't take five years to "plan" and add a bus stop to a route if they weren't wasting resources on Herr Frank's armored BMW SUV.  Yes, he really rides around in one complete with his own driver!

I just have one question, did Mr. Wilson visit Fallbrook recently?

# April 14, 2009 2:03 PM

J. Liggins said:

Perhaps he was car pooling and someone else owns an armored BMW SUV?  I really hope I'm wrong.  Even though Wilson's arrogance is well known, it'd be pretty brazen to visit you trod upon bus drivers in a ride fit for a President (of the United States that is).

I still think it sets a bad example for Metro to provide Wilson a $1000 car allowance.  I'm not begrudging the man a car, but you all pay him a maximum of $340,000, I think he can pay for TWO luxury vehicles on that salary.

I hear tell that the operator highest on the seniority list has been at Metro/Houtran/Rapid Transit since 1969.  I wonder what he thinks about his longevity bonus being threatened while Wilson is rumored to ride around in POTUS style luxury vehicles?  Rumors aside, we know that Frank is granted a generous $12000 per year car allowance.  Now, me personally, as crazy as I may be, I think a 40 year Metro vet should get that extra $12000 per year.  Anyone with time in RT/HT/Metro should automatically qualify for a $15,000 per year longevity bonus.  A drop in the bucket compared to our 1.5 billion dollar rail expansion (actually closer to 3 billion, but we'll just keep that to ourselves).

Now go easy on Frank..after all Shirley was going to fire the person that got us stuck into this crappy radio system.. instead she turned him into her chauffeur then made him Chief of Police at Metro....

And Frank really needs an armored car.. Don't all "Bosses" from the Northeast have them also?

Or is that just in the movies...

Besides when you are as popular as Frank is you need all the protection you can get.

All kidding aside, when Frank came here METRO was a cesspool of nepotism, incompetence, greed and just general screw-up-ism.

Thanks to him all if not most of those slackers are gone and been replaced with his versions of the same..

Well, with the exception of David Feely. For some reason... I like that rascal. He reminds me of someone that is aggravating, unpopular,a general nuisance.

Someone like ........

ME!

Weren't the Quickline buses going to have special interiors? Did they change those, too, when they painted some of the buses white?

BTW Los Angeles MTA has what look like "those seats" on its newer NABI buses but they actually have a layer of padding. METRO should look into that. While I like the sleek metal seats in our hybrids, they leave something to be desired in comfort.

James L:

Yes, "those seats" do have comfort issues in the caboose.

All:

On Tuesday, I was at the TMC TC.  Along Platform One I saw on the pavement a BLUE stripe with the QL bunny every so often.  The wrap for the station stop there is BLUE.  BLUE is used at the stations.  BLUE QL buses?  From the new add on order of the 3600's?

Now, we have silver for LRT, possible BLUE for QL.  How about a new color for either local and P&R?  Other cities have color coded services, why not us!

dom,

Look at the condition of our buses and notice that they have never looked worse. Back in the day if a bus was dirty it was sent back for cleaning. Bad paint was a no-no.Now our buses look like dented third world units. Scratches and dents galore. But that is like cleaning buses these days they used to actually get in there and clean, now just a trip thru the "autowash" siffices...

One day I was at 1900 Pain getting a bite to eat at the Murphy's.  Outside was David F and Andy S.  They waved me over to talk.  Both told me to ride a 3600.  Tehy wanted my opion of it.  Good paoints and warts.  They told me their were runnin on the 1, 53, 81, 82.  OK, I took them up on it.  Went to where those routes crossed.  There was a 3600 on the 1.  After I told the op I was looking at the bus, I walked around during stops.  I was impressed with two things:

1.  Bus set up.

2.  How people trashed out a brand new bus.  Papers on the floor, et. al.  I have seen stuff on the 56, and live chickens (sorrry, no pigions!)on the 25 when it went north to Northline.  I'm sorry, but I can see a reason for the BOF's NOT to do a full cleaning if people are going to POD them up.

Agreed on the bus set up on the 3600s. The higher quality interior feels much more welcoming as one steps aboard.

The rumor mill here at Fallbrook says that they are told to do the minimum during clean up.

This "supposedly" came down from David F. to scrape by on money...

I guess I need to get hold of him and see if there isany truth to that....

As it is there are too many Park and Ride buses out here that have never been "clean" according to the standards in place when I came to work here.

Just slap the seat in that 48-4900 and look at the dust and crud fly!

My official opinion the new Orions; 3500 series Hybrids >>>>> 3600 series Hybrids.

The New Flyers look better, sound better, are more consistent with acceleration and aren't capped at a dismal 55mph on the freeway. The Orions feel like a slow, chunky bus on the freeway and they are.
