All HOV Lanes Open Except Gulf Freeway

All high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes except the I-45 South HOV are open.
Yesterday, METRO Police Chief Tom Lambert explained at a press conference what we were doing to keep the HOV lanes operational and why the Gulf Freeway lane remains closed.

A lot of you are upset that the HOV lanes were closed after Hurricane Ike. I know how frustrating it is to sit in freeway gridlock next to an unused lane. Commutes were at least twice as long as what they normally are for many of you - which meant hundreds of you were probably coming home from work to darkened neighborhoods and houses.
In my post last Friday ("Park & Ride Service Running but No Rail"), we received more comments on it than any other post since this blog started in February 2007. So we understand that the closure of the HOV lanes has triggered passionate views.
As of 3 p.m. yesterday, the US 290, US 59 Southwest and US 59 Eastex HOV lanes were open. METRO started service on the I-45 North Fereway HOV lane three days ago when full power was restored. Certain ramps remain closed due to continuing power outages. Click here for details.
METRO is cutting its hours of operation to 6 a.m. - 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. to protect both the public and METRO police officers. These reduced hours will shorten the number of hours without daylight.
Many of you have asked why the I-45 Gulf Freeway HOV lane remains shut.
"The Gulf Freeway HOV lane sustained extensive damage to gates and overhead signs. METRO is working vigorously to repair this damage," said Chief Lambert. "Electricity also remains out in key locations. We are putting in place interim safety arrangements so that this HOV lane can be opened as soon as possible, but we will not sacrifice people's safety for convenience. As we did with the 290, US 59 and other HOV lanes, we will open the I-45 South HOV when it is safe to do so."
