Next Web Chat Focuses on Signature Buses
Wednesday, August 20, 2008 4:42 PM

Web chat logoOur next Web chat is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26, from noon to 1 p.m.

The topic: Signature Bus service and regionalism.

Next week, we're launching a new service that will kick existing service up a notch. The 402 Quickline Bellaire will feature fewer stops - only eight in either direction. We'll also have new bus stops that display real-time bus arrival times.

The Quickline buses will be state-of-the-art hybrid buses with interior camera security, improved climate control system and carpeting to reduce noise pollution.

Find out everything you want to know about our new Quickline Signature Service. Or, if you have any questions about transportation in this region - log on our Web site next week. The chat will be hosted by John Sedlak, our No. 2 guy at METRO, the executive vice president.

Sedlak has served as assistant general manager of planning and development, and as vice president of planning, engineering and construction where he helped develop the Red Line. John Sedlak, METRO's executive vice president

Before joining METRO in 1983, Sedlak worked at the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority where he helped plan, design, construct and start the Atlanta Rapid Rail System.

Sedlak, a registered architect, graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Science degree in architecture and urban planning.

So join the conversation next Tuesday - you'll get to ask questions of one of our top experts. If you can't stay the whole hour, log in, ask a question and then grab lunch. Or post your question here on this blog, and we'll try to get answers for you during the chat.

See you next Tuesday.

OK, how about:

482:  Westheimer QL

456:  Airline QL

404:  Beechnut QL

485:  Antione QL

464:  Guessner QL?

Dominic,

        I can add to that.

How about:

CORRECTION for yours=>446:  Gessner QL

The #64 belongs to the Lincoln City Circulator.

Mine:

452:  Hirsch/Scott QL

401:  Hospital QL

477:  Liberty/MLK QL

DANG!  That's all I can think of that I think needs a QL service.

Some left-right sparking in my brain.  Thanks!

We need to add:

4PW  Engery Corridor QL:  217 lot, SH 6, Clay Rd, Dairy-Ashford, connecting to the 53, 82, 25, 2, 4.

One could call it a extended 449.  I call it the "PW" for Peter Wang, the gentleman who suggested it!

Since I can't make it, Here's my question:

"Would the real-time bus arrival information from NextBus Inc. (www.nextbus.com)?"

How about bus service of ANY kind for those of us in the outlying areas?  N. Hwy 6 is *crying out* for some kind of relief form the traffic, and the bicyclists and pedestrians on the shoulderless road, with no sidewalks of any kind for its entire length 10 mile length.

C'mon Metro, we pay taxes to you too.  Either give us something for the our money, or stop taking it!

Everybodys comments about adding new signature service is just pie in the sky, it aint going to happen. Metro has allocated just 2 million $  for new bus service for new year. From their own reports the IAH line will require seven buses moving about 100 people daily. The Bellaire sign. line will also require seven buses and move about 1500 people daily. Metro has budgeted for one more signature line and thats it. The last line is not specified. That leaves very little money leftover for anything.  Meanwhile metro wants to stop the 18,48,snd 131 on the weekends. The 326 TMC circulator will be completely discontinued if metro gets its way. The good news is that these changes were supposed to occur last january so maybe cooler heads prevailed and these routes are safe for now.

That's why I wish Metro would just postpone these rail lines indefinitely and first focus on improving their subpar bus service.  I echo Royko's sentiments about Metro pulling the old bait and swtich with the 2003 referendum that promised 50% more bus service.  It's three years later and we have LESS service and the 3 new routes that are in service so far are two limited circulators and a small crosstown.  If voters had rejected the Metro Solutions plan we'd probably have more bus service.

When is the 482 Westheimer QL going to launch?

Any comments from Mr. Sedlak regarding the feasibility of a SH6 Energy Corridor QL route and when approximately it could be launched (which decade?) would be appreciated. Especially if BP, Shell, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil Chemicals, PDVSA, PGS, etc. are willing to pony up some spare change from their ample profits in the current $100+ per barrel oil economy? Energy Corridor General Manager Clark Martinson is trying to get the 4LW underwritten by the major oil company employers in his district.

Correction, the '4PW' should be called the '4LW', after my wife Leslie, who really came up with the idea.

I wonder if I can get Mr. Sedlack to disclose which new buses have been assigned to these new routes.

METREAUX took an extra week to merely list the new buses acquired since FY2004, yet will not disclose the routes that new buses have been assigned to.

Why is METREAUX refusing to disclose the routes these new buses have been assigned to?

Cedric Collins said:

Royko,

Why are you so overly concerned about what new buses will be assigned to what routes?  Out of all things that may not make sense to me, that's numero uno on my list.  WHO CARES?!  The person who should be asking that question is ME (a bus fan AND METRO rider)---even though it won't get me anywhere---because:

1.  I ride the buses.

2.  I may want to know so I can take pics and make my day even happier than when I actually see a new bus running the route I ride.

I can bet money METRO is probably shaking their heads on this one.  If not, they should.  Heck---I would.

Speaking of routes, what routes are you specifically talking about?  The only "NEW" routes that METRO will have that they NEVER had before are the 402 QL Bellaire and the 500 Airport Direct.  We ALL should know by now what bus model will be used for those services so I won't disclose that.

# August 21, 2008 8:31 PM

J. Liggins said:

Cedric, I hope you are being sarcastic as both the QL - Bellaire and the Airport Direct are rehashed bus routes.  The QL even recycles the 402 from the defunct Bellaire Flyer.

QL NF Hybrids have a new silver paint livery.  too bad the 5000 IAH Bush express buses did not.

Speaking on the 5000's, I think the bike storage decal should be bigger.  It is Hold 2.  Important because Holds 1,3 and 4 are for the batteries.  They have the lighting bolt (shock danger) logs.  Holds 1, 3 and 4 should have special locks to keep well grounded people (personality) from becoming well grounded (electrically)!  Do we want a "pushing daisies" bus to literally "pushing daisies".

I just found the Metro Blog spot.  My comment is similar to Clue.  Far north Harris County is out of luck if we want to get to the Galleria.  I work in Williams Tower.  There is no way to get to work on a bus.  I would give my eye-teeth for a bus route that would get me there in less than three hours!  We don't need light rain, we need commuter rail, heck we would just like bus service.

SpringCPA,

Too bad you can't rely upon METREAUX to get you where you need to go, even though you may have been paying the 1-cent sales tax since 1979.

I guess, one might want to limit any METREAUX trips to the few bars along Main Street.  Shout out if you run into Jordy.

Huh?  Why make the bike storage decal bigger?  Where it's at now (at least on the other MCIs, that size will have to do.  Otherwise, it may have to go above that curbside light that's before the compartment door handle on compartment door #1.

You may want to look at this diagram (http://www.mcicoach.com/newcoaches/publiccoaches/publicHybrid.htm).  Correct me if I'm wrong folks but compartment area #1 is/should be (on these MCI hybrid) the bike storage area.

Spook---errrr---speak for yourself, Royko.  METRO may not take certain people where they need to go but it surely takes me where I need to go---which I will NOT disclose at this time.  If not, just happily get off and walk.  Doesn't bother me---as long as I'm prepared, I'll be fine.

Dominic,

An alternative to the bike storage decal can be to actually have words on the compartment door telling people that you can place your bike in there.

Dominic,

If I have time today, I'll try to "hunt" down this Quickline bus at the TMC Transit Center---that is if I can get there in time before the morning service is over.  Wish me luck.  If not, I'll try Wednesday.  If---repeat---IF I have time, I'll try to catch that prey---errr---MCI hybrid---if the coaches are running the schedule---even though the route is not in service yet.
