Westheimer Route to Be Renamed
Thursday, August 14, 2008 5:26 PM

Exterior of hybrid busStarting Sunday, Aug. 24, the 82 Westheimer bus route will get a new name and new number.

The Sharpstown branch will be renumbered and renamed 81 Westheimer-Sharpstown-Hillcroft Transit Center.

The West Oaks Branch will be renamed 82 Westheimer-West Oaks Mall.

We'll also be shifting some Sharpstown trips to West Oaks to match the needs of our riders. The 82 route to West Oaks remains the same.

If you are riding between downtown and Westheimer/Hillcroft, you may take either the 81 or 82 bus.

Click here to see all our upcoming service changes, effective Sunday, Aug. 24.

NOW WE ARE COOKING WITH GAS!  Great idea!.  Now, the 81 should be run so that each alternating trip, so one would run via the 82-Sharpstown, then one would run the 25-Richmond Sharpstown south of Richmond.  Then there would no longer be any 25 to Sharpstown.  Then those 25's could go to the Mission Bend

Now can we doing the same to the 108, like:

101:  North Sheperd only

108:  Vet. Mem. to FM 1960

109:  North Sheperd and Seton Lake!

81/82 - not bad.  But what happened to the idea of having a non-stop connection between downtown and IAH?  Is it postponed?  Anybody knows anything?

Once upon a time (about two-three years ago), I came up with the 53 - Sharpstown Route.  I created this route by splitting the Sharpstown branches from the 25 and the 82 combining them with the 53 - Westheimer Ltd.  The 82 would serve West Oaks as it does now and the 35 - Fairview would take over service along Briar Forest.  All 25's would now at least run to Westchase P&R with select trips going to Mission Bend.  I showed this route to the routing department but nothing came of it.  Dominic's suggestion for the 25 - Sharpstown to be combined with the 81 made me remember it.

And don't tell me the Quickline is delayed AGAIN. You all were supposed to have that thing out in January 2007, then July and now August of this year.  As for the Airport shuttle, maybe they are tweaking it.  For $30 round trip that thing needs to run 24/7.  You'd think that fare could cover most of the operating costs.

And why when I click on the service changes page does it only explain the changes to the 82?  What's going on with the other routes listed?

And as far as the 108 idea, no.  They combined the 108/201 not too long ago and I'm guessing they plan on keeping it that way.

And anyone notice we no longer have "express" buses?

The 170 line is still an express bus while the other "former" expresses lines have been "demoted" to "limited" lines.

In regards to the route name/number changes, good idea.

Dominic,

I personally think METRO should do this for ALL routes that have multiple branches.

I was excited until I saw that the frequency for either route hadn't changed at all.

Now the 81-Sharpstown has a weird frequency where it might come 10 minutes then 20 minutes apart, then back to 10. The actual times may have changed slightly (+/- 3 minutes), but that's really it.

I assume the timing will be adjusted during the next schedule change.

I was unable to board the #82 the other day because the bike rack was full (sigh)

So I had to bike ride 13 miles, during which time I burned off more body fat and my abs got more Michael Phelps-like.

If your bike can be foldered, could you not put in a case and bring it onboard.  Cound not be worse than those who bring the entire Wal-Mart onboard!

If you think the WM routes are bad, try the 81/82/53 during the Nov/Dec  season.  Not only the usual passengers, but people who want to convert those routes to a mobile Sharpsteon and Galleria.  And with the traffic, there is NO schedule!

I was thinking about this the other night, and here's what I was thinking...

Generally, there needs to be 6 buses an hour between the 81 and 82, as there is now, during rush hour. The 81 needs to be 15 minutes apart, generating 4 an hour. The 82 needs to be 30 minutes apart, running twice an hour.

The two 82's need to be placed at least 8 minutes away from an 81. If an 81 shows up at 8am, then an 82 should come at 8:08 with the next 81 arriving at 8;15.
