Paying for Parking at Cypress Park & Ride
Monday, May 12, 2008 3:40 PM

Cypress P&R garage at nightSeveral of you have written in on the blog, asking how the garage at Cypress Park & Ride works.

Drivers must tap their Q Card to raise the gate and enter the garage. At that time, $1.50 is deducted from your full-fare Q Card to pay for parking. When you exit, the gate opens automatically.

When you board the bus, tap your card again. At that time, $2.00 will be deducted from your full-fare Q Card. A total of $3.50 - the same amount you were paying before the garage was built - will be deducted for parking in the garage and riding the bus to downtown.

Your full-fare card is being charged twice: once for parking ($1.50) and once for boarding the bus ($2.00).

Every vehicle that enters the garage will be charged $1.50 - including carpoolers - except for the following:

  • If the Q Card has a vanpool contract, no money will be deducted.
  • If the Q Card has a discount contract (student, senior or the disabled), 75 cents will be deducted.

Essentially, for bus riders, the balance of their fare is deducted when they tap their Q Card upon boarding. If they are full-fare passengers, $2.00 is deducted (for a total of $3.50 after counting the $1.50 parking fee). For passengers with discounts, $1.00 is deducted (for a total of $1.75, after counting the 75-cent parking fee).

The bus boarding is treated as a transfer, but the difference between the "Route 800" fare paid at the garage entrance and the bus fare must be deducted.

What happens if you forget something in the evening and must return to the garage? As long as the two-hour transfer period has not expired, you will not be charged to enter the garage again. The two-hour window begins when you tap your Q Card upon first boarding the bus.

"We tested all this stuff," said Julie Fernandez, manager of revenue analysis. "We sent information to First Transit, who provides the bus service for Cypress, to make sure they knew what was going on and that information is being communicated and updated on the Web and on our bus schedules, which previously said parking was free."

Although money is being deducted twice on Cypress Park & Ride patrons' Q Cards, it is important to note that the total amount of money being deducted is not any higher than when patrons previously tapped only once to get into the garage.

If you believe your Q Card has not been charged properly, please contact our Q Card Help Desk at 713-635-4000 and select option 2.

We are anxiously awaiting bike racks at Cypress P&R. Several Coles Crossing residents that I know want to bike from their subdivision to the P&R, less than a mile away on Skinner Rd.

There are some issues that METRO has to overcome, however which are listed on this presentation:

http://docs.google.com/Presentation?id=dgdvhhb3_130gqjkx4gv

My major gripe is... this should've been in the specs for the P&R in the first place. Who at METRO drew up the requirements? Do it right the first time; it's more expensive to re-do it later.

METRO really needs to hire a full-time, qualified professional bicycle / pedestrian / ADA person who is going to QC all projects.

At Cypress park and ride I have noticed apartments being constructed 5 ft away from the buses wait before they load passengers in the morning.  Why is Metro allowing residential so close to a noisy area?

bbornotbb,

The apartment developers are aware of the early morning lights and noise, and have made design decisions that address and mitigate those factors.

I have a problem about the location.  I think it should have built next to the UP rail line.  Just in case any sort of transit is placed in that ROW, whether on the present tackage, or built in the ROW.

The person who forgot the bike racks should spend detention with Professor Snape!

And how does one get a carpooler Q?

DominicMazoch -

Carpoolers can get Q Cards at any Q Card retailer - see http://www.ridemetro.org/FareInfo/QRetailer.aspx for the complete list. There isn't a specific carpooler Q Card type; any Q Card will work for carpoolers. Carpoolers just need to make sure to have at least $1.50 on their card to access the Cypress garage, and they can reload their cards at the Credit Vending Machine at Cypress, at any Q Card retailer, or at any TVM.

There might very be Heavy Commuter Rail at Highway 6. And at Hockley. But leapfrogging the Cypress P&R location. That's what I've seen on maps, anyway.

Mary,

How about PAY RESTROOMS operating under the same principles at major transit centers and park & rides?

$1 to use the restrooms, and you can only pay with a Q Card (no cash), but if you get on a bus within the next two hours, $1 is deducted from your fare?

217 has been packed. This morning, I arrived at 7:30am to try to catch the 7:40am bus. The bus is all full. I can't even have space to stand and the bus driver told us it is the last bus, we just have to go somewhere. And we paid for the parking too! Please do something!

Had same problem, the 7:40 bus is packed to the brim every morning.  They need one more bus after this one.  Need something fast.

This is a problem that has gotten progressively worse over the past 3-4 months. I prefer to ride the 217 roundtrip every day. However, it now seems like every bus has standing room only during the morning and evening commutes.  In the morning, some buses are full 15 minutes before they are scheduled to leave and by the time they leave the aisle is completely full with standing passengers.  Is there a plan for adding buses? I have started going back to the 214 in order to have a seat.

Where are the apartment residents going to park?  Are they going to be taking up space in the Metro garage?
