Transferring Balances at Corporations
Friday, March 07, 2008 2:23 PM

Q CardGood news for some employees of corporations that offer subsidized METRO rides: We have started going out to corporations to transfer balances to the Q Card.

Yesterday, we transferred hundreds of balances on striped magnetic cards to Q Cards at Center Point.

"Our clients seemed to be extremely pleased that we were taking this extra step to make the system friendly to them," said Mike Flory, fare retail management director here.

Today, METRO teams are at Baylor and UT Health Science Center transferring balances. Next Wednesday, we'll be at El Paso Corporation. Other RideSponsors we are currently scheduling include Shell, Chevron, Chase Towers and Penzoil.

"We wanted to make the transition smoother for our RideSponsors," said Nicole Adler, METRO's advertising account executive. "We have organized teams and have gotten in touch with each of the employee transportation coordinator of the RideSponsor companies and coordinated a date, time and place in their building to make it convenient for their employees."

Not all RideSponsors have asked METRO to come on site to transfer balances. Some have opted to collect magnetic striped fares from their employees on their own.

Remember: March 31 is the deadline to transfer balances from striped magnetic fares to your Q Card.

For those of you who do not work at a RideSponsor company, you need to come to one of our RideStores (1900 Main or 1001 Travis) to transfer balances to your Q.

Okay, so why can they do this, but cannot go out in the field to Park and Rides and offer the same service to riders there?  This makes no sense whatever, given what we've been told previously.  I have asked this question several times with no answer, so I will try again now:  Who can I call about this issue?

I'm sorry, but I have to rant.  Who's bright idea was it to have the entire city go to only TWO addresses downtown and transfer their balances?  On top of that, only ONE is open briefly on the weekend to accommodate working folks?

M'neeka is right: offer the same service at the Park and Rides!  Sheesh!!

I went by the CenterPoint transfer location on Thursday.  There were 4 or 5 Metro employees there doing transfers and they had several computers, smart-card readers, and old mag card readers from a bus.  Quite an operation but time consuming to transport and setup, plus they needed electric outlets to run everything.  If they (Metro) had planned ahead, they could have taken some seats out of an old articulating bus and made up a mobile transfer station to take to the Park and Ride lots, but it would be expensive to pull off.

Metro announced the switch to the smart card over a year ago and they assumed that people would only buy enough mag cards to go month to month and not accumulate large amounts of mag cards that would need to be transferred.  So if you can use the cards up by 3-31-08, you should do so.  They stopped selling the 365 day passes so they did not have to figure out how to transfer them to a Q-Card.

I work for one of the rideshare companies mentioned and have not heard anything about transfering the magnetic card balances.  So I waited in line for an hour to get it done myself.  Hope the rest of the riders at the office don't have to wait an hour each.

Talk about timing!  When I get back to my PC from waiting in line 30 mins to transfer from one SVC to Q, I had an email telling me that 48hrs later Metro would be at my company!  And all this less than 2 weeks prior to the SVC being totally worthless, but more than one year after Q cards were announced.  A point or two, Metro, for finally doing the right thing, but minus several hundred for lack of planning!

Can anyone tell me when they will be going to Penzoil Building? How can we find out about the future places so I can transfer my SVC before 03.31.08

Carol Leong,

METRO will be at Penzzoil from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, in the tunnel in an empty retail space to transfer balances from corporate passes to Q Cards. This is not open to the public but only to corporate pass holders who need to transfer balacnes to their Q Cards.

Mary & Carol,

That’s great for Pennzoil... how about the rest of the corporate customers? Or is Metro still expecting the rest of the city to converge upon one point downtown?

When first told of the Q, we were told there would be multiple places to transfer SVC balances to the Q. I may be wrong, but it *appears* Metro was lying to us.

Yep, me again, caught in another Metro lie.

I noticed there are “temporary Saturday hours” for the Main Street address, I’m assuming to handle the rush of SVC to Q card transfers. Great, I thought, since I can’t make it downtown during the week, I’ll bite the bullet and spend a Saturday Morning standing in line. At least Thelma’s BBQ will make it worth the wait afterwards <grin>

I got there just before noon on Saturday, and Lo and behold, there was practically no line! Wow, maybe I was grumbling for no reason? Naahhhhh.... I was told, “I’m sorry, she just left about five minutes ago…” “She” was, I’m assuming, the only person in the company that could transfer balances. “She” couldn’t work the entire time y’all were open (hence the lie). NOBODY else knows her job -- there were two other nice ladies working there, but apparently they are not trained in the delicate operation of transfering balances.

So, I have to waste, er, spend yet another Saturday morning trying to claim my money and not give it blindly to Metro. Thanks for nothing…

Kurt,

Sorry this happened to you. Certain agencies - such as the IRS and the DOT - have asked that their employees go the Treasury Department on the second floor at METRO (not opened on Saturdays) to transfer their balances to better keep track of their records. But in most cases, the Ride Store staff should have been able to help you. Multiple people are trained to handle transfers every Saturday.

Could you please send an e-mail directly to the supervisor of the Ride Store who would be happy to help you transfer your balance? Contact: Cindy Brandt at cb21@ridemetro.org or call 713/652.8995. Thanks.
