METRO's Marketing Team Wins ADDY Awards
Friday, February 22, 2008 5:17 PM

Poster of Lucy, the exhibit for Museum of Natural ScienceThe ADDY Awards, one of the world's biggest and possibly most competitive advertising contest, receives more than 60,000 entries worldwide.

METRO has garnered one of those awards - the Silver ADDY Award - for the creation of the Lucy poster.

The poster was designed for the Museum of Natural Science's world premiere of "Lucy's Legacy," featuring the world's most famous fossil. METRO partnered with the museum, promoting METRORail as an easy way to get to the museum.

"We had not submitted anything to the ADDYs since 2003, and it's good to be back in the saddle," said Del Balbin, director of marketing. "We were able to see how this would appeal to our riders. It's all about being compelling - be it in written form or graphic form."

The ADDY Awards are unusual among other advertising creative competitions because they include three levels of judging: local, regional and national/international. Four awards are conferred: Gold, Silver, Student and International.

METRO also captured four Citation of Excellence Awards for the following;

"We're back to showcasing our award-winning work," said Balbin. Houston winners were honored on Feb. 9 at a ceremony at the downtown Hyatt Regency.

I like the poster above, but not the poster on the LRT.

Other TAs have ads and such on their buses (don't know about trains) so why METRO can't do that?  Since y'all want METRO to be like these other TAs for some reasons or another, putting ads on the buses and (again, don't know about trains) can be a start.

Here's a clarification from Del Balbin, director of marketing:

"The ADDY Award was for the creation of the bus cards that were used on METRO buses to promote taking METRO to the Lucy exhibit."

Cool.  Is it still on there or did they take if off?  Now---when I say ads on buses and trains, I would go along the lines of ads for---for example---car dealerships---or something like that.

The way the law creating METRO was writen, METRO can only place "public service" announcements on buses and railcars.

Some of that was a reaction to the UGLY bilboards that were on the old Rapid Transit and HouTran units.

But if a smart ad company bought some buses, wrapped them, and leased them to METRO, that might fly.

It was neat going inside the bus and seeing thru the ad.

Dominic,

That would be great for some already wrapped buses to be here but that, to me, would be a tad more waste of time when we can wrap what we already have.  Of course, METRO doesn't have to keep the buses wrapped for a long time.  They can get rid of the wrap.

Elena,

As long as you can see though the ad, I'd still welcome one on a bus any day.  Though I haven't been any anything that was wrapped, I can bet it would be a neat thing.
