Two Awards Recognize METRO's Leadership & Preparedness
Thursday, February 14, 2008 5:05 PM

Photo of Congresswoman Sheila Lee Jackson, Tom Lambert, & Kip Hawley, TSA administratorMETRO received top honors Monday when the Transportation Security Administration recognized both our transit security system and our chief of police, Tom Lambert, for his excellent work.

The first award - called "Carrier of Distinction" - placed METRO in the top 5 percent of all transit systems nationwide for emergency preparedeness. As "Carrier of Distinction," our system was lauded for "superior performance in security program development, planning and execution."

"That's pretty significant," said Lambert.

Pictured above is Congresswoman Sheila Lee Jackson, Tom Lambert, and Kip Hawley, TSA's top administrator.

The second award recognized Lambert's leadership in chairing the 18-month-old "Police and Security Peer Advisory Group." Members of that group include: New York, Boston, Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Philadelphia, Amtrak, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C.

That's a pretty impressive list of huge transit agencies. How did Houston's METRO get to be the leader?

About 18 months ago, Lambert told Hawley that it was vital to involve the police chiefs of the nation's major transit systems in any discussions on security.

"We have to be partners at the table," Lambert recalled, pointing out that certain rules on paper didn't make sense in reality. For example, there was once a guideline suggesting all rail platforms be outfitted with bomb-resistant trash cans. The only problem was that that technology doesn't exist.

So the TSA created the advisory group that meets monthly via teleconferencing. The group produced a one-year business plan which Hawley has moved forward, along with streamlining the way agencies receive security grants.

"He's lived up to his end of the bargain - listening and being a man of his word. He said he's going to do certain things, and he did it," said Lambert of Hawley.

Lambert's award acknowledges those same qualities.

"We don't care who gets recognized. What we care about is getting the end results. When you're willing to communicate, when you're willing to let people have a voice at the table, then we all get a shared buy-in to the end result," said Lambert. "When you don't always get a win/win, we're not afraid to challenge issues. When we say we're going to do things, we do it, and our word is respected as a bond."

It's not just government officials who are praising our chief. Consider the case of blog reader Diana Reyna, who expressed concern about the HOV lane I-45 North violators.

"It does, indeed, pay to voice your thoughts because as of last week, I noticed police stepping up and dealing with these single riders who abuse the HOV land on I-45 North," said Reyna in an e-mail to me on Monday.

"Mr. Tom Lambert is great for listening and taking immediate action in dealing with this issue. If I could write anyone to let them know what a great experience I've had with being heard and commend Mr. Lambert, I would," wrote Reyna.

Congratulations, Chief Lambert!

Tell that to the operators who can not rely on the METRO police when they are being assaulted while units are deployed inefficiently.

I'm still waiting (after four months and prevailing in a TXOAG decision OR2008-00476, issued over five weeks ago)for the specific records, including the hourly logs evidencing the officers' statistics in the phoney baloney "Rail Blitz" propaganda.

Even the TXOAG finds it incredible that METREAUX has no records or documents.  Too bad the DA hides under his desk when anyone whispers M-E-T-R-E-A-U-X.

I actually encountered a rail blitz on Monday, at the UH-Downtown Station. They had both Metro police and UH Downtown police checking fares, there were about 6 officers by my count.

Todd,

METREAUX doesn't want youi or anyone else to know such information as, if released, would permit private citizens to anticipate weaknesses in the METREAUX Police Department, avoid detection, jeopardize officer safety, and generally undermine MPD efforts to effectuate the laws of this State.

I hope you feel safer on "Animal Farm - Houston."

Am I missing something here?  Why must you want this kind of info for?  It's not going to get you nowheres.  As long as these cops can do their jobs like they're trained to, what's your concern---since you don't ride METRO?  Don't like what they're doing?  Take over their job(s).  Ready for the challenge?

"Animal Farm - Houston."  Remember when someone called you a chicken on another blog about chatting with METRO (not METREAUX) President and CEO Frank Wilson for some reason?  Well---welcome to the farm, Mr. Royko!

What?  Uh-Downtown cops checking for fares also?  I wonder why---besides that this is at the UH-Downtown campus.  Maybe HPD should help out on this one---especially getting people away from the stations (homeless folks, for instance).

I'm waiting for Metro Police to crackdown on the Metro bus drivers who run red lights every afternoon and block intersections for entire light cycles.  I'm sure I'll be waiting until the end of of the world.  In the meantime, I've been taking photos and video of the busses running lights and such.  When one inevitably runs down another pedestrian, perhaps it will help in the court case.

Mr Collins,

It was this blog.  Please try to keep them straight.

Still waiting to arm wrestle Mr. Wilson at the UH-D.

He sure seemed irritated at my comments made to the COH Transportation committee last Tuesday.  One would think he'd meet the challenge.

TSA? I work for them.  Hopefully we expand further beyond airport security as I'd love to do something outside of Hobby.

ms.  pants, not taking up for my fellow operators but there is a real problem here....its beyond the red lights, blocked intersections etc.  its a breakdown of communication with the whole entire system.

we have been cheated and cheated on time and equiptment.  the schedules have been compacted  so tight until it is impossible to keep or even try.....

I tell the operators, do what you are told to do....SAFTEY BEFORE SCHEDULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I GET IN THE BUS, RUN MY SCHEDULE AS CLOSE AS I CAN (KEEPING SAFTEY AS MY MAIN CONCERN, AND MAKE MY DAY FILL OUT MY OVERTIME SLIPS AND LET METREAUX < EXCELLENT ROYKO> PAY ME!!!!!!!!!

IF ITS LATE, I MAKE AN ISSUE TO COVER MY A$$!!  CALL DISPATCH AND REPORT IT AND KEEP SLOWLY MOVING!!  IF YOU ARE LATE TO YOUR DESTINATION, WHAT DO I CARE???????????????????????????????????????  I AM DOING WHAT I WAS TOLD TO DO AND METREAX TOLD ME TO DO THIS SO .....OH WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mizz_porkie,

It is my understanding that the split shifts are extended, and the shuttles METRO used to operate so as to help the operators was discontinued; thus, many have to rely on METRO buses which now have poor on-time rates, which causes them to arrive late.

I never blame the public for their stupid comments about operators.

That statement can’t be explained without offending the hierarchy @ 1900. Ill do what I am expected and keep quiet.

Let me clarify my earlier statement. Metro officers were the ones actually asking the passengers for their proof of payment. The UH-D officer were there because of course the station is on UH-D property which make sense that they were present on the platform as well

"HOV enforcement is a joke..

1 officer on the 45 north HOV in the AM stops 1 violator,

20+ pass behind him as he takes 10 minutes with his back turned to amble back to his motorcycle to do his thing then return..

Word has it that METRO gets none of this revenue, perhaps that is why it is not a priority to them.

Let the city enforce the occupancy requirements since they are the only beneficiaries of enforcement.Take those officers stopping traffic on TRAVIS(as they are using their uniforms to stop the legal flow of traffic)and place their $50+ hind-ends at the entrances of the HOV.

That way we can get down Travis in the evening without all the "RENT-A-COPS" stopping us at parking garages, resulting in late local buses, AND use the HOV lanes as they were designed to be !

Just a thought

wi11ie"

Now the trips that used to take 30+ minutes on the HOV lane are taking about 15 from downtown..

Does Tom Lambert read the blog?

He must, and I am dang proud of the service we have received since the HOV blitz started.

Just don't make it an off and on thing. Needs to be a everyday thing!!!

Hey here's an idea ...Death penalty for HOV violations!

No wait, too much.... OOH,OOH! I know!

1st time fined.

2nd time huge fine!

3rd time vehicle seizure like in drug cases
