Lobby Transfers Speed Up Wait Time
Friday, February 01, 2008 5:11 PM

People in lobby transferring balancesStarting today, METRO has set up operations in the RideStore lobby at 1900 Main St. specifically to transfer balances from Stored Value Cards to Q Cards.

Around 12:30 p.m., the line was moving briskly with an average wait time of three minutes.

Roshan Lee, who works for the Transportation Security Administration, walked right up to the table - no wait - and transferred $30 on two Stored Value Cards - to a Q Card.

"It's been easy so far," she said.

One line was devoted exclusively for students to transfer balances. Trina Thomas, a Q Card retail sales employee, said she was busy explaining how the process works and making sure customers registered their cards.

Maybe it was the crisp air and sunny skies that put people in a good mood, but even customers were helping each other out. One middle-aged woman had a $100 bill she wanted to put on a Q Card, and the reloaders only accept $1, $5, $10 and $20-bills. The woman said she was disabled and couldn't stand in the long RideStore line to make the transfer with a staffer.

Another customer overheard her problem and volunteered to give her five $20-dollar bills in exchange, thus letting the disabled woman easily load her Q Card on the reloader on the Explorer Bus, parked outside our lobby.

Lynn Lau, a 55-year-old retiree from the insurance industry, rode the bus from west Houston to downtown to pick up a Q Card, not realizing she could get one at one of the hundreds of retailers around the city. People in lobby transferring balances to Q Card

"I'm set to go. I can travel around the world with this card," she said, laughing.

You have until March 31 to transfer balances from Stored Value Cards to Q Cards. In addition to the second-floor window at our treasury department, balance transfers can now be done at these tables in the RideStore lobby, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

I believe I suggested this idea a couple of weeks ago on one of these Blogs.  I'm glad Metro decided to use my idea.  Now if you would just raise the $500 limit on the Q-Card to a higher level like $1500, I would be really happy.

Why are my express routes charging me $1.50 on my 30 day pass? Shouldn't it be $1.00??

Realistic; If it is a 30 day red pass for Zone 1 it should only say Enter if it is valid.  If it is a Local 30 day pass, it will ask you to add $0.50.  I believe, and Mary can check, Metro is charging the Express fare at $1.50 for magnetic media (Blue SVC and Red 30 day passes) while the fare is $1.00 when you use a Q-Card.  The $1.00 on the Q-Card is true since I ride the 163 home sometimes and the Q-Box deducts only $1 from my Q-Card.  So the moral of the story is to start using the Q-Card for the express buses.

I hear the time to receive a Q-card is 3 to 5 days "plus shipping."  I requested a card on the web site on January 14.  Yesterday makes a full three weeks.  We are on day 22.  I understand the 3-5 days.  How long is "plus shipping" expected to take?

I checked my route schedule and it shows the express routes at $1.00 not $1.50. METRO wants me to use up my passes to avoid more Q card transfers but then they are going to charge me $.50 more to do so?  That does not make any sense.

Richard,

I am so sorry about the long delay. I'm sure it's frustrating. The three to five days to process Q Card requests was the time frame last week. Unfortunately, I think your Jan. 14 online request may have been in the batch that had technical problems. If you send me an e-mail with your full name, I will try to research it and find out why you still don't have your Q Card. Go to "Contact Us" in the navigation bar on the left to send an e-mail. Thanks.

RE: Paying $1.50 for express routes when using magnetic striped media vs. paying $1 when using the Q Card.  I will check on that, but I think P&R Rider is correct.
