First Day Results at 222 Grand Parkway
Monday, January 28, 2008 4:58 PM

Opening day at our newest Park & Ride in Katy recorded the second-highest morning ridership, trailing Cypress Park & Ride garage's opening last January.

We counted 201 passenger boardings on 12 peak trips for an average of 17 boardings per trip. The highest single-trip ridership occurred at the 7:15 a.m. departure with 29 boardings. The least crowded bus carried nine passengers at the 6 a.m. departure.

The parking  sign is being revised. We know it's confusing and heard from both blog readers and customers at the lot.  Here's what you need to know: If you ride METRO, it's free all day. If you are not a METRO patron, you will need to pay $3.50 to park.

The new sign should be updated by Tuesday.

METRO is expanding the lot by 100 spaces and improving the pathway from the parking area to the bus stop. Operations said that if and when this Park & Ride proves successful, you can expect more improvements to the lot.

"By taking a modest approach, METRO was able to begin this service immediately, addressing an obvious need," said an operations spokesperson.

Other factoids about our first day at 222 Grand Parkway:

  • 101 men and 100 women boarded.
  • Of the 206 passengers, 26 paid for the ride with a Q Card.

If you haven't picked up your Q Card yet, we'll have the Explorer Bus at the lot all week so you can get a free Q Card and load it with a balance.

Nice to have a new Park & Ride out there in that area---for people who really need it.  I wish this new route the best of luck.

I know this is a place for 222, but I have posted on the 217 related questions, no response. My question is: In Phase 2 of Metro Solution, is the Cypress CRT going to be implemented? If so, what is the target finish date? We all know 290 traffic is the worst in Houston....... We sat in traffic for 40 minutes every morning to get to the HOV only, makes our morning commute 1.5 hrs.

It's great Metro is expanding the Park and Ride service on the Katy Freeway.  What about easing the pain on the Southwest Freeway?  I have ridden both 221 Kingsland, and 265 West Belfort and while 221 is busy, it's nothing compared to 265.  I hope there are plans to change rider requirements to 3+ during peak times as on the Katy Freeway, add more 265 buses and/or eventually add a new park and ride further out on US 59.

I doubt they're going to be able to add another P&R on the Southwest Freeway that far out. If you look at the system map, the West Bellfort P&R is already on the edge of the service area and the Harris County line. And unfortunately, I don't think Sugar Land will want Metro "tainting" their suburban Shangri-La anytime soon with a Park and Ride.

Why doesn't the 222 stop every second block like the 221?  This route is inconvenient!
