222 Grand Parkway Opens on Monday
Thursday, January 24, 2008 5:40 PM

Map of location of P&RIf you live in Katy, you know that driving to work downtown on I-10 can easily take 90 minutes. It is bumper-to-bumper gridlock.

We've got good news for all commuters who live out west. This Monday, we're opening a Park & Ride lot east of the Cinemark 19 Theater at Katy Mills. Service will run weekdays nonstop to downtown every 15 minutes, from 5:30 to 8:15 a.m. and return every 15 minutes from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Click here for a detailed schedule.

You will be able to park free in the lot if you ride METRO. Otherwise, car owners will be charged $3.50.

The new lot has 500 parking spaces with room to expand. We project that by the end of fiscal year 2008 (Sept. 30) we will average 545 daily boardings. A boarding is when someone gets on the bus. A boarding is not the same thing as a passenger.  For example,  500 boardings would mean 272 people are making a roundtrip to and from downtown.

METRO's Explorer Bus will be parked in the lot the week of Jan. 28. You'll be able pick up a Q Card, if you don't have one already, and load it with money.

Other important dates:

Feb. 29: Last day to get transfers without a Q Card.

March 31: Last day old passes will be accepted. After this date, you'll need cash or Q Card to board the bus.

Now, this boarding thing is confusing.  Example:  I'm at Bissonnet at Kirby.  I got there via the 700 and 65 from Downtown.  Now I go back to Downtown via the 18.  How does the boarding system work here?

Or I take the 18 south, and catch the 700 back Downtown.  What is the count?

Or thak the 18 north to Richmond, 25 to Wheeler, 700 Downtown?

18 north to Westheimer, 82 to Downtown.

Most people take the same route(s) to and from where they are going.  But for some, there are various combos.  That has to mess up the numbers! (Some of the above are "out of the way", but used as examples.)

Will the 229 go to this lot?

I looked at the MetroSolutions website, and I noticed two things: that there are 4 new Park and Rides planned for Phase 2, and that the Bellaire Signature route isn't on it.

I see that two of these P&Rs will be up and running as of Sunday, Grand Parkway and Cypress. What's the current timeline for the other two, 288/Airport and Clear Lake?

ChloeMireille,

We continue to have discussions with Pearland officials about the possibility of the 288 Park & Ride.

Still trying to find a time frame on Clear Lake.

I planned on taking the 222 today until I drove by yesterday.  The sign in the parking lot at 222 Grand Parkway says Parking for Metro 5am-2pm.  All others $4.  It has numbered parking spaces and a fee box.  Who gets home by 2pm when the bus doesn't even have mid-day service?  Surely, it is a misprint or just a poorly worded sign.  Can someone at Metro clarify that sign?  Also, who decided to place the bus stop on the blind side of a curve?  The bus stop has one of those glass huts with a bench.  Mud and high weeds surround it, no sidewalk on either side to stand.  This is a park & ride where a large number of people would board, not just 2 or 3 people.  Are they supposed to stand in the street or wait to cross the street after the bus arrives?  It doesn't appear that this PR lot was well thought out.  It looks like Metro is wanting this lot to fail.  What gives?

I also drove by the new 222 lot Sunday. The fee sign on the parking box has to be the most confusing thing ever!

As I read it, you had to pay $4 to park and then pay to board the bus.  Also it says Cinemark patrons are free.  Now how on earth are they going to tell who is there for the movie who parked for that 11:30 showing, versus somebody parking for the P&R?  I guess they could collect parking fees before the movie opens.  Also, service back ends at 6:30.  That really puts a crimp in using the 222 vs 221.  I can see my car at 222 and had to take the 221 back because service ended an I got stuck at work on a computer problem.  Also, that tiny shelter is a JOKE! Wait for the rain to push  mud everywhere..

For what it's worth, Metro took down my phone complaint and called me back within an hour.  Exellent customer service! Metro said they are addressing the sign issue immediately.  They are also considering a gated lot that Qcard will open and charge $3.50 and then $0.00 to board the bus.  The manager, who took 222 this morning, also said that they are looking at building a parking garage (like 217-Cypress) in the NW corner of GP/I-10 (around 99cent store warehouse) in the future.
