More Answers to Chat Questions

During Tuesday's chat session with Frank J. Wilson, METRO's president and CEO, we received a lot of questions on the Q Card. Here are the answers. There are a few more questions pending - I'm still working on those.
Q: At the chat, Mr. Wilson said that 3/31/08 was the cut-off date to transfer funds between the Blue Cards (Stored Value Cards) to the Q Card at treasury, but a METRO employee at the Travis RideStore said we could transfer after 3/31/08. Please confirm the correct date when balance transfers end.
A: Sorry about the confusion. Mr. Wilson was correct. You will not be able to transfer balances from Stored Value Cards or passes after March 31.
March 31 is also the last day you will be able to use a 7-Day, 30-Day or Stored Value Card on a METRO bus or train.
Q: I have saved several 30-day passes and will not be able to use them all up before March 31. Will METRO allow exchanging unused (not activated) passes for a Q Card?
A: Yes, but it depends where the card came from. If it were provided by your employer, many employers are requesting unused passes and unused Stored Value Cards be returned. If this is the case, please check with your employer.
Treasury will know by the serial number of the card where the card was purchased
If you bought your own 30-day passes, you may transfer multiple passes to the Q Card, up to a balance of $500. But remember, all balances must be transferred by March 31.
Q: I currently have a Stored Value METRO card that has more than $100. Since my employer has started providing bus passes, I will not use this full amount by the end of March. Since I see that this card is non-refundable, can I get the value transferred to a Q Card.
A: Yes, but you must transfer before March 31.
Q: How will METRO officers know if someone has tapped their Q Card to ride the rail when checking?
A: Our officers will be randomly checking Q Cards with a special wand that is actually a handheld computer. When that is passed over a passenger's Q Card, the officer will know if a rider has paid.
Q: Since there are no longer going to be bus tokens, what are we going to do with our patients in the ER who only need a one-time ride home, or patients who need to get to the homeless shelter? We will not have any way to assist patients with a one-time ride.
A: At yesterday's board meeting (1/17/08), Mr. Wilson and David Wolfe, chairman of the board, said METRO would manufacture new $2 Day Passes specifically for the social service agencies that now use tokens.
