METRO's First Web Chat a Success
Tuesday, January 15, 2008 6:33 PM

Frank Wilson & staff in first Web chatA great big thank you to the 64 users who logged on and joined the conversation in our first Web chat today at noon.

From our end, Transit Talk was very successful. Everyone followed the guidelines, was respectful and asked really good questions. In fact, we were inundated with questions flying at us from different users all at once - and of course, there was no way Frank J. Wilson, our CEO, could answer all of them.

We appreciate your interest, and we apologize that every question couldn't be answered today. We tried to answer the questions in the order they appeared on the chat. Some of you submitted questions on the blog before the chat began - and unfortunately, we were unable to address those. Others mentioned that you could not read all of the  questions. Please note: You are only able to read from the exact time you log on - previous questions and answers won't show up on your screen.

We will post a transcript tomorrow on the blog. Here are a few photos. In the first photo, left to right: Joanne Wright, chief of staff; CEO Frank J. Wilson (he talks faster than he types), Mary Sit, typing Mr. Wilson's answers; and George Smalley, vice president of communications and marketing, against the wall. In the second photo, left to right are:  Frank J. Wilson at the computer; Rich Lobron, project advisor; John Sedlak, executive vice president, Raequel Roberts, senior director of media; and Jesse Quintanilla, Web designer.  Not pictured is Chris Smoke, IT wizard extraordinaire, who helped ensure this was a smooth launch with no technical glitches.

Let us know how you liked our lunchtime chat, and if you found it useful.

Well,

At Fallbrook none of us were able to Join the chat session as the PCs in the clubroom are not able to go to the INTERNET.

They are so outdated that they barely make it to the INTRANET.

So a quick trip into the Asst.Superintendents office where internet access is allowed and couldn't log on there either.

It just sat and churned, showing no users on the chat and not allowing US or HIM to participate. Was sort of a letdown....

wi11ie,

I'm sorry you had so much trouble trying to log on. I will check with IT to find out why the computer in the assistant superintendent's office didn't work. Not sure why it showed no users in the chat room. We hope to do these monthly, so hopefully, next time the computer you use will work.

Mary,

Thank you and Mr. Wilson for providing us with today's chat session. This was a wonderful opportunity to communicate, and I'd like to offer a suggestion, if you wouldn't mind.

On my end, the questions continued to scroll upward while Mr. Wilson attempted to answer them. By the time he had the opportunity to post a response, I couldn't tell which question he was addressing.

If it's possible, does this chat application give you the ability to receive questions in the background? This would give you the opportunity to then respond to them on at a time.

For example:

We received this comment:

My response is:

Thanks very much for considering this.

I'd like to type more but I have to go to work but I'll say this; I commend everyone involved with setting up and executing the chat session.  Metro has been suffered a barrage of attacks from all sides recently.  Even I was fed up with you guys.  However, you all finally opened yourselves up to the riding public in a way I never even imagined.  If someone told me Frank Wilson would chat with potentially disgruntled riders during his lunch break (and even go into overtime) I would have had a hearty laugh.  Now however I see that Metro is showing that it might be serious about turning around it's tarnished image.

Hopefully the chats will stay on Tuesdays preferably before the board meetings.
