Slowin' Down and Feelin' Happy
Tuesday, October 23, 2007 5:24 PM

Close-up of speedometerIf you're used to speeding on the HOV lanes, you'll need to slow down.

Last Saturday, METRO changed the traffic signs - alerting drivers that the new speed was changing to 65 miles per hour from 70 miles per hour.

Why the slowdown?

The METRO Police Department says the speed was changed to match the freeway speed limits of those locations. The five changes with the new speed limits are at the following locations:

  1. 45-N in-bound at Paramatta
  2. 59-S in-bound at W. Airport
  3. 290 in-bound at West Road.
  4. 45-N out-bound at FM 1960
  5. 45-N in-bound at Kuykendall

"The lanes were always 70 miles per hour.  And then several years ago, they changed it to 55 because of fuel conservation. Then because of public outcry, they changed the speed limit back," said Off. Dennis Ribeiro of MPD, adding that the speeds are slower inside the Loop and faster outside the Loop. Speeding police car

"As the freeway main lanes change speed, the HOV lanes were catching up. Two of them were changed Saturday; the rest were being changed yesterday and today. We're just catching up with Tx DOT, so there's no disparity," said Ribeiro.

Hmmmm.

Now if we can get some enforcement out on the 45 N. HOV perhaps all the morning single passenger suits will get off there and we can at least get up to 60 mph..on the drive in.....

Ms. Sit,

What ever happened to the MPD Supervisor who was driving on U.S. Hwy 290 like a "bat out of Hell" (PC#339663) over the Labor Day holiday?  I made an inquiry on 10-06-2007, and an officer Davis called to say she did not know, but was sure the matter was dealt with in the chain of command.

Baloney!

I am curious to learn if the "discipline" was merely a letter in the file; whereas, I and the rest of the motoring public would likely have been arrested for reckless driving, had our vehicle stolen and held

for ransom by some SafeClear felon, had to pay for an attorney, been assessed an enormous COH traffic court fine, suffered a revocation of driving privileges, surely hammered by the new State penalty, and be

required to buy  SR-22 insurance seemingly for life.

Further, I was deeply disappointed, after I was nearly run off the freeway by a METRO PD Supervisor, to be told by METRO that even though there are numerous TRANSTAR cameras on every expressway, they could not get the TRANSTAR video to document the alleged violation(s) which are the basis of my post-Labor Day complaint.  Who's monitoring MPD violations?

Maybe they can get the speed reduced downtown. When the lights change it's like a drag race and if you're a pedestrian look out because no one is going to slow down for you. If your're not careful you're liable to become collateral damage.

The 70 mph were short segments, but one would think you would encourage people to use bus/carpool if the speeds were HIGHER!

Don,

I've gotten off the 82 at Post Oak and Westheimer.  Crossed the later.  Almost had ped-auto interfacing, even though I was in the crosswalk with its light green.  Its worse in the Galeria area!

You have got to be kidding!!! Those speed limit signs wont matter anyway as someone wrote earlier, single riders on the 290 hov keep the speed at a crawl or stopped completely in the morning and afternoon!

I have always thought 3+ riders was overkill but there must be a way to enforce the 2+ without impeding traffic too bad! How about a fine of $1000. or more for the first violation, no one seems to care about $200 anymore

Mr. Collins,

Just wanting to know if METREAUX actually disciplined one of their own.  Some may want to know who is watching those who are controlling the rest of us on ANIMAL FARM-Houston.

DUDE!  Let me just tell you what the point may be here.  IF YOU'RE NOT SATIFIED ABOUT THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE HOV, THEN BY ALL MEANS---KEEP YOUR BUTT ON THE MAINLANES!  If you think METRO PD should be disciplined, then tell that to the Texas State Troopers or somebody.  Who cares what METRO PD does; as long as they do what they're paid to do, be happy that they're doing something.

Mr. Collins,

It may comfort some to know you don't care what METRO does.  Others might have an interest in monitoring the METRO abuses, as civilized society has learned that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
